Besides pretty girls and fat cats, skulls are easily one of the most common things I draw. My friend requested a “secret wall tattoo” with a Southwestern theme. My mind went straight to sugar skulls, rattlesnakes and cacti. He also asked for a cow skull so I threw that in there. And, of course, to fill up space, my go-to: art nouveau arabesques. End result was more morbid than anyone expected…
3.5 hours, pencil and Sharpie marker on a wall. I was paid in bacon-cheese scones. Worth it.

Been a bit of an insomniac for the past week…
I actually drew this a few months ago for Day 8 of the 30 Day challenge (favorite colors) but I think I’m going to start over and not cheat—by drawing them in the proper order and not skipping around.

This past weekend was so sunny, I chose not to study Microbiology or Pharmacology at all! I went out for pho, volunteered, explored 3 Asian food stores, watched two movies (Emma Watson in The Perks of Being a Wallflower inspired this a bit), Top Chef and The Walking Dead, screeched while attempting to play video games and even went to the Big City for dim sum and ice cream. Good times.
Ah, night-owl drawing…how I missed it. Started this around midnight, ended close to 3AM.
In terms of outfits, winter is my favorite season. I can get away with wearing a lot of dark clothes—sometimes all black—and plus I get to wear scarves! Bright happy scarves!

I jumped on the bandwagon and drew a Sugar Rush character because…when I walked out of Wreck-It Ralph, I was filled with an intense longing to work at Disney Animation as a character designer/story artist so this is just me being wildly self-indulgent and pretending to be a Disney artist…My friends said I would be a sour candy (black cherry Warhead??) hehehe
I loved Wreck-It Ralph!! I had a stupid grin on my face throughout the entire film. The images and designs were novel and beautiful, everything story-wise was so refreshing, the lead female characters were so dynamic and unconventional, even though it was a “kid’s movie”…And the animation…there were tiny little facial expressions/moments of acting that were so…natural.
If Brave wins Best Animated Feature over this…n-no it just can’t
And lo…my fancy magazine cover commission! Remember when I was working on this? It was challenging, but I actually really like how things turned out. I was very much influenced by Sachin Teng (style) and Kali Ciesemier (color).
This thing is going to be on the front cover of the Fall 2012 issue of the Hopkins Undergraduate Research Journal, which is being released tomorrow! If you happen to be in the Johns Hopkins/Baltimore area, grab a copy! This issue focuses on the many facets of health—healthcare delivery, medical ethics issues, mental health, American conceptions of wellness—all good stuff.
Anatomy is overwhelming me, so I tried motivating myself by thinking of post-final festivities. Then those thoughts started distracting me and I’m back to where I started.
It’s going to be a long night…

I remember doing this last year—between Genetics, Biostats and traveling to med school interviews—and being happy with the product but a little unsatisfied. But now I really like how this looks! I think I took some inspiration from Emmy Cicierega, but it’s still very ‘me’ :)
*Sigh* studying anatomy on Halloween is strangely appropriate but also sad…but then again, I also spent last year’s Halloween studying!
