Besides pretty girls and fat cats, skulls are easily one of the most common things I draw. My friend requested a “secret wall tattoo” with a Southwestern theme. My mind went straight to sugar skulls, rattlesnakes and cacti. He also asked for a cow skull so I threw that in there. And, of course, to fill up space, my go-to: art nouveau arabesques. End result was more morbid than anyone expected…

3.5 hours, pencil and Sharpie marker on a wall. I was paid in bacon-cheese scones. Worth it.

I just want to show you guys I’m alive! I spent the previous week doing Medical Humanities stuff (theater, creative writing, art, etc) and now I’m spending a week at home doing research. By research, I mean enjoying mom’s cooking and napping on a mat in the grass under a cherry tree.

But I don’t have my tablet at my parents’, so I’m posting a preview of something I started as a medical humanities project and still working on…

What did I do today in medical school? Acting exercises:

Played “What are you doing?” One person mimes an activity, you ask what they’re doing and they say something they’re NOT doing. Then you mime the activity they named and do the same to someone else.
Played “Bunny bunny bunny”. People stand in a circle. A person holds their hands beside their head and says “bunny bunny bunny bunny bunny” while the people on either side of them say the same while holding up one hand. The person in the center of the three passes the role to someone else in the circle, and the new person and the two on either side of them start doing the same thing—everyone passes the “bunny” role and supporting roles all over the circle until someone messes up.
Played another similar game where each person chooses a fruit of two syllables or less, and one person in the circle says one of the fruit names three times in a row—if they manage to say “guava guava guava” faster than the guava person can interject and say “guava”, then the guava person has to take up the calling role.
Passed around an invisible box. Each person giving the box had to state what was inside it and each person receiving it had to say something about that object and do something with it. I received a teleportation/time travel button so I used it to travel back to WWII and slice Hitler’s head off with a katana. Yes, I shrieked when I did it and this was in front of other real people who were watching me…uggghh
Formed a moving machine where each of us did a rhythmic activity with an accompanying noise
Passed weird movements and accompanying noises to one another in a circle and transformed each into a new weird movement and noise. By far, my least favorite activity today. I don’t like making weird grunting and whooping noises
Read a neutral script and acted it out as different characters. I played mean/combative people better than sweet/flirty people apparently, lol
Make a partner do something without speaking or touching them
Stand in front of everyone and do nothing for at least 2 minutes…
We were told out of the blue to close our eyes and describe each other’s clothes. I was pleasantly surprised/proud when the professor said I was a boss at this activity. Observation ftw

I know this all sounds weird, but the purpose of today was to get us used to being centered, calm, quick on our feet, ready to try new things outside of our comfort zone, to communicate physically, to exert a specific presence or aura, and to observe well. All of that is useful for future doctors! Plus it’s fun!

Since finals, weather over here has been gray, gloomy and sad. It’s been getting me down. I haven’t been feeling like doing anything. Can’t even draw…But doing fun things with friends—watching new movies and Jeopardy, playing video games and board games, hanging out—makes everything better :)

HAHAHAHA I just learned this yesterday, in our Bioterrorism lecture, of all places!! Of course, the lecturer’s point was to emphasize open-mindedness to new possibilities and ideas, no matter how fixed we are in our ways…Anyway, just thought I’d reblog to preserve that little memory from class.

(BTW I have my finals tomorrow. I’m scared…)

How I spent my “spring break”:

Shadowed in Infectious Diseases. Not as sexy as it seems in movies…but pretty awesome all the same. Strep, staph, yeast, endocarditis…and LEPROSY
The attending pulled a Khmer statue of Alexander the Great from 300 BC that had been exhibited for 30 years at the Met, and started lecturing about Alexander the Great, typhoid, malaria, empyema and Cleopatra…I touched the statue, too! ID is awesome.
Cooked! Including some deep-fried chicken that made me very proud.
Napped each day for about 2 hours. Achievement? Yes.
Watched the whole first season of Mad Men alone, 200 lbs Beauty with Koreans I love (too bad I didn’t love the movie), Chernobyl Diaries with boys, Jurassic Park 3D with girls.
Finished a pretty cool drawing, which I will post soon…drew a ton of other stuff too!
Ate frozen yogurt and Cherry Garcia (my friend just introduced me to this magic) on the couch, in my pjs. Hence this doodle. Good, good times.

Essentially, I spent this whole week goofing off and not studying. I barely cracked open my notes once. But hey, it’s not like I have microbiology and pharmacology final exams next week…oops I do
